This Review discusses four main effector pathways of the IFN-mediated antiviral response: the Mx GTPase pathway, the 2′,5′-oligoadenylate-synthetase-directed ribonuclease L pathways, the protein kinase R pathway and the ISG15 ubiquitin-like pathway.
