Summary

A high-throughput isolation technique based on scattering signatures, which exploits the tendency of many ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) to form microcolonies in activated sludge, revealed a deeply branching and unrecognized lineage and diversity within the genus Nitrosomonas.
