Summary
Investigation of the low energy isomers of the acrylonitrile ion using density functional theory as well as high levels of ab initio theory indicates that not only the global minimum but also several higher energy isomeric molecules have the necessary CCNC backbone needed for the reaction with HCN to form the cyclic pyrimidine framework.
